Social Angels: With the Elderly

Meet one of the most noble projects of ESN CoimbraSocial Angels: With the Elderly.

The Projects department is one of ESN Coimbra’s newest additions. Its mission is to foster unique experiences centered on mutual help, aiming to improve the student community.

Among its initiatives is Social Angels, a project with various components, including “With the Elderly.” This event brings international students to local nursing homes where they engage in activities with older residents — from playing games to sharing life stories. These moments help combat loneliness among the elderly while offering students the chance to connect with different generations and nationalities, fostering empathy, learning, and respect.

Giovanna Batti, a recent member of the department, serves as the main organizer. The latest edition, held in October, received excellent feedback from both participants and the partner organization, Casa dos Pobres de Coimbra. As the visit took place near Halloween, activities included crafting DIY festive decorations.

Giovanna believes this event introduces Erasmus students to meaningful volunteer work. She emphasizes the importance of encouraging students to interact with elderly residents in care homes, bringing joy to their routines in a calm and thoughtful way.

This project, like many ESN initiatives, offers more than just a learning opportunity — it serves as a catalyst for change, inspiring all involved to move forward with compassion, courage, and vision.
